Marion Village 5K draws 250 runners for 18th annual race

Jun 21, 2014

Road construction may have altered the course of the 18th annual Marion Village 5K on Saturday, but 250 people still found their way to the starting line.

“I’m glad you all found the starting line,” race director Chris Adams told runners. “Hopefully, that will be the biggest challenge of the day.”

Instead of starting near Tabor Academy, runners began the race near Old Towne Landing.

“I’m sorry for the change. There is a lot of road construction in Marion this summer,” Adams said.

This was the 14th year that he has coordinated the race.

Prize money was awarded to the top three men and women finishers. The Marion Recreation Department is also a winner as money raised by the race is donated to fund department programs.

The first person to cross the finish line was Middleboro’s Andrew Sukeforth with a time of 15 minutes, 49 seconds. Saturday marked Sukeforth’s fourth straight win at the Marion Village 5K.

“It always seems to be a nice day whenever I run this race,” the Bridgewater State University senior said.

Marion’s Kim Bolick placed first in the women’s field with a time of 19:24. A college track star, Bolick was the first woman to run a mile in less than five minutes at Connecticut College. Her time was 4:49.34. In March, she was 13th in the mile at the NCAA Championships with a time of 5:02.33.

In second place was Michael Creedon, 17:03 and in third place, Mike Grasela, 17:15. The top female finishers were Joanne Matthews in second place, 20:23 and Pamela Friedman of Marion in third place, 21:27.
