Marion voters approve $2.87 million in capital expenses at Town Meeting

May 8, 2023

MARION — Marion voters packed into the Sippican School multi-purpose room on Monday, May 8 and had their say on 34 items on the 2024 Spring Town Meeting agenda.

Every item on the agenda was passed by the town.

Marion voters approved an allotment of $2,879,536 for capital expenditures including a new $1.2 million ladder truck for the Marion Fire Department, a police security camera upgrade, a VCT floor tile replacement in Sippican School and more.

Marion voter William Washburn asked if the town approached Tabor Academy to “throw a little in [for the firetruck.]”

According to Marion Town Administrator Geoff Gorman, the town has not talked with Tabor Academy. Gorman added that he is “more than happy to have that conversation” with Tabor Academy.

Included in the capital expenditures was a $90,000 F350 4x4 truck and plow from the Water Enterprise Fund and a $65,000 jetter that would be split between the Sewer Enterprise Fund and the highway department.

Mairon voter Edward Bancroft asked why funds were being used from enterprise funds for “what would appear to be a general town expenditure.”

“I don’t know how a plow truck falls under the Water Enterprise Fund … and the same thing with the jetter … how [does] that become a Sewer Enterprise Fund expense?” asked Bancroft.

“The reason why they’re broken up like this is because they are truly for the Water Enterprise [Fund] and Sewer Enterprise [Fund],” said Mooney, who added that the truck is used “by the Water Enterprise staff.”

Marion voter Sherman Briggs raised questions about the $75,000 Lead Service Line Inventory.

“This inventory is conducted to identify sources of lead in drinking water and utilize and implement plans to remove lead service lines in the distribution system for public health protection,” said Gorman.
