Marion’s new town sign to be unveiled at Sept. 20 ceremony
MARION — The town will soon have more manicured entryways and a new official town sign.
The Marion Garden Group fundraisers that have allowed the community group to launch the Marion Town Beautification Project. Selectmen have given their support for the mostly privately funded project.
“The event was a success and raised money to launch our project to do more for our town,” said Liz Hatch, who chaired a July 26 garden gala at her home, and who is a driving force behind the town-wide beautification project. “There will be four areas landscaped by the end of September with more targeted for next spring.”
The new town sign will adorn the corner of Route 6 and Front Street, on the Captain Hadley House property, she said. A brief ceremony and unveiling of the soon-to-be placed town sign will be at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20.
But even prior to the new town sign unveiling event, Hatch said Marion Garden Group plans to landscape the Spring Street island, the Converse Road island, and the Route 6 turn around, coming into Marion from Mattapoisett by the ‘Welcome to Marion’ sign.
Hatch said the town garden group’s future “target areas” are the road islands coming off Route 195 toward Marion, as well as entry ways to Marion from Wareham. A lot of the work will be done by volunteers and members of the Marion Department of Public Works, she said.
In the meantime, garden group members are asking residents to weed areas of their properties with street frontage.
“I will be working with the town on help to support an ongoing maintenance program for our landscaped and neglected areas,” Hatch said.
Hatch said a tennis tournament fundraiser is tentatively planned for spring to establish a maintenance funds for the various planting locations.
