Masons invite public to Square and Compass Day
On Oct. 17, the Freemasons of Marion are inviting local residents into the Pythagorean Lodge for Square and Compass Day, an open house happening at lodges across the state.
Jordan Correia said people believe the Masons are a "secret society," but he and his fellow Masons across the state want to show people some of what the group does and allow the public to ask questions.
Growing up as a first generation American, Correia felt different from the old families in town who could trace their heritage back to the Mayflower.
"I didn't feel I was a real American like them," he said.
As a kid, learning that the founding fathers were also descendants of immigrants as well helped him dispel the idea that he wasn't a true American.
George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Hancock and many others became his heroes. These same men were also Freemasons, said Correia.
"It is part of what drew me to Freemasonry," said Correia, an ambassador for the Square and Compass Day.
The event will take place at the lodge, 13 Spring Street.
