Mattapoisett Community Tennis opens season, looks for new members

May 27, 2016

The Mattapoisett Community Tennis Association is back for another season and looking to grow its membership.

The nonprofit group started in 1999 hoping to expand Mattapoisett’s tennis courts, which were eventually taken over by Mattapoisett Recreation. The group continued though, and now plays three mornings a week, at Tabor Academy early in the season and Old Rochester Regional High School once the semester ends. There are also several tournaments throughout the season, both in-house and with other tennis groups.

“Mainly the group is geared towards seniors,” said Wayne Miller, the group’s long-time president.

He said the association’s members are expected to top 50 this year and include players with a range of skills. The group would like to see more female players and welcomes new members of all ages to participate.

The cost is $15 a year and $10 for each tournament.

Drop in games began May 17 and will continue through the summer on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. at Tabor Academy tennis courts. Members will receive an email when the games are moved to ORR.

A picnic will be held at the end of the year and Miller said the group is very social.
