MATTAPOISETT — Firefighter Drew Weaver won the Mattapoisett Fire Department’s 2023 Core Competency Award.

The winner was announced in a Jan. 26 Mattapoisett Fire Department Facebook post.

According to the post, Weaver was tasked with changing from his civilian clothes into  his structural firefighting gear, don a SCBA breathing apparatus, start breathing on air and finish preparing to work.

Structural firefighter gear includes fire resistant jackets and pants that can weigh up to 70 pounds.

Weaver competed against Firefighter Silas Costa and Captain David Scott. According to the post, Weaver was able to complete the task in 60 seconds. 

“Congratulations to all three for making it this far in the challenge,” said the Mattapoisett Fire Department in the post.
