Mattapoisett Land Trust Awarded State Grant for Salt Marsh Restoration Study

Dec 4, 2023

MATTAPOISETT — The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management has awarded the Mattapoisett Land Trust with just over $80,000 to study the tidal marshes west of Mattapoisett Neck Road.

The study will explore conditions in nearly 250 acres of salt marsh and will be completed by June 30, 2024, according to a Mattapoisett Land Trust press release. This area is currently one of the most degraded salt marshes in Buzzards Bay, according to data from the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

The research will use field studies and computer modeling to evaluate future marsh conditions in light of increasing rain, wind storms and sea level rise.

After research is conducted, a salt marsh habitat restoration plan will be written. It will describe current and future conditions in the marsh and feasible restoration actions to help restore healthy ecological function within the marsh.

Partners working on this study include the Mattapoisett Land Trust, the Town of Mattapoisett, Buzzards Bay National Estuary Project, Buzzards Bay Coalition, Plymouth County Mosquito Control and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management’s Coastal Habitat and Water Quality program.

Much of the technical work will be completed by Woods Hole Group and Greenman Pederson, Inc., according to the press release.

A public meeting will be held before the conclusion of the study to discuss study findings and restoration actions identified by researchers.
