Mattapoisett Land Trust gets support from Selectmen for quarry purchase

The Mattapoisett Land Trust is looking to raise $600,000 to purchase the historic Old Hammond Quarry adjacent to Mattapoisett Neck Road, with the hopes that $250,000 of those funds will come from a state grant.

On Tuesday, Selectmen agreed to support the nonprofit’s application for a Massachusetts Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, which is due in early March.

The quarry was the source of pink granite that was excavated and sent throughout the area. It appears throughout Mattapoisett, at the Town Wharf and as curbstones in the Village. It was even sent to Nantucket, said Land Trust President Mike Huguenin.

The granite is still visible throughout the 53-acre property. The Land Trust has hosted two walks at the site in an effort to get residents excited about the opportunity to preserve the property.

In addition to state funds, the Land Trust is also asking for $75,000 from Community Preservation Funds. If the Community Preservation Committee approves the funds, they will then go to Town Meeting for a vote.

Additional funding will be sought from The Nature Conservancy and private donors.
