Mattapoisett Laundromat collects nearly 200 coats for non-profits

Jan 5, 2012

The Mattapoisett Laundromat does more than just take clothes in—it also gives clothes back.

The business collected approximately 160 new and used coats for Child & Family Services to be distributed in the greater New Bedford Area after its fourth annual One Warm Coat drive this winter. Coats, mittens, gloves, scarves and snow pants were also collected.

Laundromat manager Doreen Gomes and assistant manager Nancy Duff coordinated the drive with the New Bedford-based private non-profit.

“Every year I think, ‘There won’t be any coats left to give,’ and every year the community opens its closets and gives,” Duff said.

Mattapoisett construction company Fisher & Rocha, Inc. delivered the truckloads of clothing. More than 760 coats have been collected since 2008, with more than 560 donated to Child & Family Services.

“Seeing people choose coats that put smiles on their faces and knowing they will not be cold this winter is heartwarming,” said Child & Family Services Director of Development Susan Remy.

“Nancy and Doreen do a fantastic job organizing this coat drive, and we are thankful to be recipients.”

One Warm Coat is a national non-profit that encourages and supports coat drives. More than one million coats have been donated since its inception in 1992.

Sherri Wood, president and national coordinator for One Warm Coat, said Mattapoisett’s efforts are outstanding.

“More people than ever need help these days,” she said. “I am proud of the thousands of coat drive organizers whose creativity and generosity of spirit is making a real difference in their own communities.”
