Mattapoisett Library offers kids 'a day at the spa'
The downstairs meeting room at the Mattapoisett Library was a place to be pampered for kids and their dolls on Friday.
"Welcome to our spa day!" said librarian Jeanne McCullough.
The My Doll and Me day gave little girls an opportunity to dress up, get their nails painted and bedazzled, decorate headbands and hair brushes, and take a picture with their dolls. But the highlight of the event for the kids was getting their hair styled by Holly Coutinho in "Miss Holly's Salon."
"I've watched many Youtube tutorials," said Coutinho as she transformed 4-year-old Maria Silva's locks into a French braid.
The mother of a young daughter named Savannah and a nanny for two girls, Coutinho has gotten good at fashioning different braids quickly.
"I do their hair every day I'm there," she said. "They've definitely given me my practice."
McCullough said the librarians noticed how beautiful Savannah's hair looked when Coutinho brought her to the children's department. Coutinho said she was interested in doing a spa day, so the library organized it.
The event was a hit with kids signed up for slots at the salon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Boys also participated in the crafts, though they showed more interest in the LEGO bricks than the headbands.
The event was staffed by Junior Friends of the Library volunteers, who helped out at the craft tables.
