Mattapoisett Lions surprise community member with award

Dec 15, 2016

The Mattapoisett Lions Club's Christmas party turned into a surprise award ceremony on Wednesday evening as several people were honored for their generous contributions of time and resources to the club and community.

While few people at the event knew about the ceremony, one woman, who isn't a member of the club, was particularly caught off guard.

Melody Pacheco, the assistant to the Mattapoisett town administrator and the organizer of Holiday in the Park, works behind the scenes for the community in countless ways. But she thought she was just coming to a Christmas party with her husband, Kenny Pacheco.

Instead, she was awarded the Melvin Jones Award for her service. The award goes to those who have served the community as well as to those who have donated $1,000 or had that amount donated in their name.

“It's a way to recognize people who have done significant things for the Lions or the community,” said member Ron Ellis. “Pretty much anything that goes on in the community, she's in the middle of it.”

Kenny, a long-time Lion and retired police officer, also received the honor, though he thought it was only going to wife.

Lion Robert Moore took the opportunity to praise both Pachecoes.

“She’s a true asset of the town, an ombudsman,” Moore said of Melody. And of her husband he added, “He was a tremendous man on the police force. He did so much for this town unasked. He’s been a contributor for years and years and years.”

Melody was thankful for the award, but said like many who work behind scenes, she likes to stay away from the limelight.

“I’ll still be helping like I always do,” she said, even volunteering to help the club sell tickets to its Valentine’s Snow Ball.

Others were surprised to receive awards as well.

Past president Robert Haley accepted an award for supporting eye research, a primary focus for the international club, with the Mattapoisett chapter raising $10,082.34 towards the cause.

Rebecca McCullough and Bob Saunders also received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, receiving a plaque and lapel pin.

Six people received the Melvin Jones Progressive Award, given to those who have extended their contributions to the club.

The awardees, announced by District Governor Sharon Audette, were Bill Calusine, Ray Covill, Peter Hodges, Mike Lamoureux, Paul Levine and Bruce Rocha.

The event was held at the Pythagorean Lodge in Marion.
