Mattapoisett to look for new harbormaster
Mattapoisett officials will soon be on the search for a seafaring lad or lass to fill the position of harbormaster.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne has spent several months honing a job description for the position with interim Harbormaster Horace Field and the Marine Advisory Board.
Although the position will require full days from May through mid-September, Gagne said, “The harbormaster for Mattapoisett is going to be a part-time basis until revenues change with any significance.”
The job will be around 912 hours a year, including 9-12 hours during the summer.
“The big factor with this job there will not be the issue of health insurance coverage, which is a very costly endeavor,” said Gagne.
Within two years of accepting the job, Gagne said several state-required certifications must be completed.
Field, who has already held the interim position for two years, said he would like to see someone hired soon. "I need another person anyways. We only have six total now, and there are seven days in the week," he said.
Selectmen hope to find someone for the position by Memorial Day, which will give Field an opportunity to train the new harbormaster.
