Mattapoisett musician self-produces debut album

For Berklee College of Music student Sutton Gaddis, band mates may come and go, but his love for music never leaves.

Before ending up in the tri-town, the Mattapoisett resident lived in Yorktown, Virginia, though he was born in Concord.

It was his admission to Berklee that brought Gaddis back to Massachusetts, and a friend from high school that brought him to the South Coast.

Gaddis began studying at Berklee in spring 2012, but after three semesters it had gotten too expensive so he took a break from school. But he wasn’t ready to step away from the band he’d formed. Little did he know, however, that the album they were making would take some turns.

“We went through a lot ups and downs,” said Gaddis.

The band, The Figures, originally consisted of four people. But in the spring of 2014, one of the co-founders had a change of heart and left the music scene completely.

Down to three members, the band had to make some changes to the album-in-progress.

“We decided to reconfigure the record we were making and push forward and start a different product,” Gaddis said.

However, eight months into working on that album, another band member left.

“He said this life isn’t for him,” Gaddis said.

That left the band down to two people, Gaddis and drummer Eric George. The album had to be reworked yet again.

“Each time someone left, it set us back,” Gaddis said. “He and I finished it just the two of us.”

While studying at Berklee, Gaddis learned about music engineering and production, so he had enough knowledge to produce the album independently.

“It’s cheaper to do it on your own,” he said. “We had the equipment, and the house had a pretty big basement, so we made it into our studio.”

The album, called “Anything Less Than Everything is Too Little,” was released this past January.

Gaddis said described the style as indie rock with a ‘60s and ‘70s rock vibe.

“I grew up listening to classic rock,” he said. “The Beatles are my biggest influence, followed by Elton John.”

He said the band got the word out locally, but does most of its promotion online. Now, with an album out, Gaddis is back at Berklee and performing with George when he gets the chance.

“I’m looking to graduate next summer,” he said.

And after that?

“I want nothing more than to be an artist,” he said, even after the challenges of producing his first album.

His love of performance and production leaves the possibilities wide open, but in an ideal world, Gaddis would get to do both.

“I love to perform, I love to play, I love being in front of a crowd,” he said. “I love engineering and thinking about music in an abstract way. If I could just cut my own records that would be ideal.”
