Mattapoisett public bus route poorly used
Mattapoisett’s access to the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority bus system is likely to be cut due to a lack of passengers.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said a survey of the Mattapoisett Shuttle, which stops at the Village Court and goes to several locations in Fairhaven, found an average of two passengers a day.
“I would expect, in the months to come, based on low ridership, they’re not going to continue this bus route,” said Gagne, who attends monthly meetings with the Transit Authority.
Rather than lose access altogether, Gagne wants to support the creation of a route that would go through Mattapoisett, Fairhaven, Acushnet, and Freetown to the train station in Lakeville. He said the other towns have already sent letters of support for the route.
“Rather than let this go and die, I want to try to see if I can put it into something where the ridership would be greater,” said Gagne.
