Mattapoisett Recreation cancels summer programs

Jun 1, 2020

MATTAPOISETT — The town’s recreation department, in consultation with the Town Administrator and Health Agent, decided June 1 to cancel summer recreation programs.

Recreation Director Greta Fox said she made the decision because it would be difficult both to re-train staff and to hold programs.

“We are extremely disappointed we will not be able to offer our scheduled programs. This decision was made, as always, with the safety of our children and their families in mind,” Fox said.

Mattapoisett Recreation will continue to monitor situation and hopes to get programs up and running as soon as protocols and safety allow.

Although playground and picnic areas are closed, the Recreation Department reopened the tennis and pickleball courts on Hammond Street, with special Board of Health guidance.

Face coverings must be used when players are unable to keep 6 feet away, unless players live in the same household or have a medical condition that makes breathing difficult with a mask.

Groups of 10 or more cannot gather on the courts, and players must bring all of their own equipment and take any trash with them.

The town officials said that guidelines can change based on state mandates and protocols.
