Mattapoisett Recreation Committee to expand offerings
Mattapoisett’s Recreation Committee Chair Jeremy Collier is looking to bump up the size of his group and the program’s offered to the town.
Collier came before Selectmen on Tuesday, May 22 to get approval to add two members to the committee for a total of seven.
“We really want to get some more programs going in town,” said Collier. Among the current offerings are basketball, softball and gymnastics as well as a two new classes this summer – paddleboarding and paddleboard yoga.
Collier said, “Right now we have really solid programs around youth and teenage events. We’re looking for more Council on Aging, infant and some adult programs.”
Collier hopes to draw candidates for the committee’s openings from people also involved in the annual Road Race, Old Rochester Little League, Bike Path Committee, Mattapoisett Community Sailing Association and lacrosse. Those interested in programs for seniors are also encouraged to consider joining the committee.
Along with the new members, Collier said the group will move their meetings from once a month to twice a month from September through June.
“It’s not a lot of heavy lifting,” he said. “There is a recreation director so it’s a lot of setting policy and giving her direction with which way to move forward.”
Collier encourages anyone interesting in joining the group to contact the committee. He plans to add the new members in one to two months.
Regarding programming he added, “We would really like to get the town involved and see what they want to do.”
