Mattapoisett School Committee balances 2013 budget without cuts

Mar 13, 2012

With no staff or service cuts included, the Mattapoisett School Committee will likely accept a 2013 budget next month to send before the May Town Meeting for a vote.

The budget subcommittee is asking for $59,882 in additional costs to cover contractual obligations and classroom materials.

During the March 12 meeting, Superintendent Doug White presented the latest draft of the budget prepared by the elementary schools’ budget subcommittee.

The draft calls for the additional $59,882, or 1 percent increase from the 2012 budget, for new materials in both the English Language Arts and Science courses, as well as to meet with staff contractual needs.

This figure is down from last month’s draft of the budget, which called for an additional $106,995.

School Committee Chair Gracinda Knox said that due to lower special education costs and the schools’ savings in utilities costs, the budget subcommittee was able to get the 2013 budget to “an acceptable amount.”

“We’re very fortunate,” Knox said. “We’re fortunate to have lower special education costs, as well as stabilization of energy costs. It’s been a long process as usual. It’s certainly to a level where the town can support it.”

In special education costs, Center School and Old Hammondtown School will see combined savings of $7,000 due to a reduction of the number of students in the program.

The School Committee will hold a public hearing during their April 9 meeting.

After the meeting, the committee will be submitting a final proposal to go before the May Town Meeting for approval.
