Mattapoisett student raises funds to go to presidential inauguration

Mattapoisett resident and Tabor Academy student Matthew Carvalho is planning to go to the presidential inauguration in January with some help from the community.

The rising sophomore participated in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference after completing the sixth grade at Old Hammondtown School, and last winter, the organization invited him back for the Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit.

Carvalho said he wasn’t sure if his busy schedule would allow him to go, but the opportunity was too good to pass up.

“I just thought it would be a good experience,” he said. “It was a hard opportunity to miss.”

During the summit he will hear from leaders such as Colin Powell and Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai. Plus, he will get to see the next president sworn in from the National Mall.

The cost for the four-day summit is steep, around $3,000, so Carvalho is working this summer as a stagehand and apprentice at the Zeiterion Theatre to save money.

“It’s a really hard schedule, but it’s so rewarding and I love doing it,” he said.

Family and friends are also helping out, and Carvalho said he’s hoping members of the community will support his trip as well.

He has set up a GoFundMe fundraising page where anyone can donate: https://www.gofundme.com/2fbfa.
