MATTAPOISETT — A time capsule that’s been sitting under the Shipyard Park gazebo will be opened on July 17.

But there’s one problem: the town’s Select Board can’t find the key.

“I have to find the key to this time capsule,” Town Administrator Mike Lorenco said at a June 29 Select Board meeting.

“We don’t have the key,” Town Administrator’s Assistant Mel Pacheco said.

The Mattapoisett Lions Club is set to reopen the capsule, which was placed 50 years ago when the gazebo was dedicated in 1971.

“We can get the key man to come,” Pacheco said.

The board has another meeting on July 14 between now and the opening, so there’s a little bit of time to figure out how to get the capsule open.

“You can’t make these things up,” Select Board member Jordan Collyer said.
