MATTAPOISETT — Lifelong Mattapoisett resident Rosemary Loer managed to find the perfect service project to combine her love of math, machines and the environment: flying drones over Sippican Lands Trust and Matttapoisett Land Trust properties and compiling the data to make an accurate picture of the current state of the properties.

The Old Rochester Regional High School graduate and daughter of Martha and Robert Loer received the 2019 Town of Mattapoisett Scholarship.

Starting in her freshman year, Loer took a course at Lockheed Martin, solving two hour math problems and tackling less theoretical projects, like building a marshmallow launcher. She continued the class in her sophomore and junior year.

She plans to attend Tufts in the fall, where she will major in mechanical engineering “with a heavy focus on sustainability and renewable energy,” she added. She would also love to do a dual degree program in economics, if possible.

She was drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of Tufts, because she also loves reading and classics.

“I wanted to be able to take courses not only in engineering, but in those areas as well. I found the community of students to be so accepting — once I visited my mind was made,” Loer explained.

She was also involved with St. Anthony Parish in Mattapoisett, where she both served on the altar and helped with other church programs, like mobile ministries.

Loer looks back on her school years so far as “memorable” and “a great time to grow.” She said she feels honored to have gotten the scholarship and appreciates the continued show of support from the town.

“I’ve lived here my whole life and always known I had people behind me. But [getting the scholarship] just really tied it all together,” Loer said.

The Town of Mattapoisett Scholarship is provided on behalf of the residents of Mattapoisett through a annual collection sent out with excise tax bills. The Tax Collectors also accepts donations for the scholarships at its office.
