Jan 27, 2024

MATTAPOISETT — The emergency order issued in early January that closed shellfishing in some Mattapoisett waters has been lifted as of sunrise on Saturday, Jan. 27, according to the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

Shellfish growing areas BB7, BB10 through BB23, E1 and E4 in the towns of Mattapoisett, Dartmouth, Westport, Fairhaven, Falmouth, Gosnold and the city of New Bedford are now open to shellfishing.

The order was originally issued on Jan. 11 following heavy rainfall on Jan. 9 and 10 that caused combined sewer overflow discharges in communities across Buzzards Bay.

Areas that were previously classified as “prohibited” before the  Jan. 11 closure the will remain closed to shellfishing.
