NEWPORT — The Mattapoisett Woman’s Club Garden Group botanical arrangement won first place in the horticultural division of the Newport Flower Show on Saturday, June 24.

 The Newport Flower Show gives gardening enthusiasts a place to showcase their design talents and botanical knowledge in three divisions including horticulture, botanical and flower design. 

This year, the flower show  followed a “Grand Tour” theme, showcasing plants and flowers from around the world. 

Garden Group members Susan Perkins and Sharon Doyan took home the blue ribbon and a certificate of excellence for their Sicily themed botanical arrangement. 

“We’ve placed before but this is the first year that we took home the blue ribbon,” said Doyan. 

Perkins and Doyan used succulent plants and cacti to represent Sicily’s climate and even modified the pot by adding cracks to add a rustic feel. 

“We wanted to evoke the feeling of Sicily,” said Perkins. 

Both Perkins and Doyan expressed their excitement about the award. 

“We were thrilled to bring it home to the Mattapoisett Woman's Club,” said Doyan.
