Mattapoisett woman crashes into train

A 19-year-old Mattapoisett woman crashed her car into a train in Bourne on Thursday, resulting in a citation and a trip to the hospital.

The woman, whose name is not being released, ran into the side of a train car at the Academy Drive crossing at approximately 7:19 a.m. She was apparently making a U-turn. The train was carrying trash to SEMASS.

Lt. Richard Tavares, of the Bourne Police Department, said “substantial damage” was done to the front end of the woman’s car. She was transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham by Bourne EMS. Tavares said her condition was not life threatening.

“The air bags weren’t activated, so she wasn’t going that fast,” said Tavares. “Another second or five seconds sooner and there would have been substantial damage.”

Although there was no gate at the crossing, Tavares said there were flashing red lights to announce the train.

The woman was cited for failure to stop at a red light at a railroad crossing.
