Mattapoisett YMCA holds fundraiser on the lawn for families
To send more kids to camp, the Mattapoisett YMCA invited local families for an evening of lawn games, laser lights, food trucks and fire trucks on Friday night.
“We really just wanted to change our fundraising pattern a bit,” said Executive Director Joe Marciszyn. “The need is still there to send more kids to camp. We wanted to do it in a fun way.”
For $20 a car, families could attend the event with proceeds to pay for tuition for kids in need.
The camp has been popular, especially this summer, said Marciszyn. More than 400 campers came to the Y in one week.
“It’s been growing little by little each year,” he said. “It’s growing because the families love it, the kids are enjoying themselves, they’re learning new things.”
Instead of a clambake fundraiser this fall, Marciszyn said, “We wanted this to be a big community event. We wanted to involve more camp families.”
A number of food trucks lined the lawn with lawn games, live music and face painting on the grass. Fire trucks from Mattapoisett, Marion, New Bedford and Fairhaven were also on the scene for kids to enjoy. Later in the evening, families were treated to a laser light show.
