Mosquito with West Nile Virus found in Marion
The Marion Board of Health announced on Monday that West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from the town.
West Nile is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state and are found in urban as well as more rural areas. While West Nile can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at a higher risk for severe infection.
The public is urged to take common sense precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Avoid outdoor activities during the evening or early morning and cover up with long sleeves, pants, and socks. Use insect repellant with DEET, permethrin, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to the instructions on the product label. Drain standing water and make sure screens are secure and any holes are repaired.
