Mother's Day Tiara Race gets long-term approval

On Tuesday night, the New Bedford-based Women’s Fund got the green light to hold its annual Mother’s Day Tiara Road Race for many years to come.

The race is hosted by Oxford Creamery owners Liz and Ken Ackerman and raises money for the Women’s Funds’ work with girls and women on the South Coast.

On Tuesday night, members of the organization and Liz Ackerman met with Selectmen to request approval for next year’s race.

Instead of only approving the race for its eighth year, Selectmen said they wanted to “lock in” the race for the future.

“I’m assuming you’re going to do nine, ten and eleven,” said Selectmen Chair Macallister.

Melody Pacheco, assistant to the Town Administrator, asked the Women’s Fund members to put a larger emphasis on collecting canned good in conjunction with the race.

“We have food pantries that are in dire need of food,” said Pacheco.

Women’s Fund Executive Director Kate Fendtress said the organization would be happy to promote a canning drive.
