Movies in the Shipyard Park returns with 'Selma'
The Mattapoisett Lions Club and Old Rochester Regional High School are teaming up to present 'Selma' at Shipyard Park on Friday night, the Academy Award winning film about civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"When I saw it in the theaters I said to my wife, 'I want to show this in the park,'" said Lions Club President Don Bamberger.
Paramount Pictures offered the DVD for free to all high schools in the country. Bamberger and Principal Mike Devoll have collaborated on the showing, getting the word out to high school students before they left for the summer break.
Bamberger said he hopes to see a large crowd at the event, especially in light of the recent shooting tragedy in a Charleston, South Carolina church.
"Our thought was, showing this in the park puts kids and parents next to each other seeing this movie and hopefully parents will get some very interesting questions from kids," he said. "It is an important movie to see."
Last summer the Lions Club screened four movies at Shipyard Park, and Bamberger said the next film will be shown towards the end of July.
'Selma' begins at sundown, approximately 8:20 p.m., on Friday.
