Nasketucket Bay project gets $50,000 boost from Town Meeting voters

Special Town Meeting voters approved a $387,500 appropriation towards the 400-acre Nasketucket Bay Preservation Project, of which all but $50,000 will be reimbursed to the town through grants.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition has been working on the land purchase, which will be added to the state’s Nasketucket Bay State Reservation.

Approximately 250 acres of the land is located in Mattapoisett, off Brandt Island Road, while the rest is in Fairhaven.

Town Administrator Mike Gagne told voters that an additional $128,000 would be requested at Annual Town Meeting in May through funds from the Community Preservation Act.

The project totals almost $5.5, and approximately $4 million has already been raised or promised. Brendan Annett of the Buzzards Bay Coalition said the land would help preserve the watershed and includes forest, fields, shoreline, beach and salt marsh.

Mattapoisett Land Trust President Gary Johnson urged voters to approve the article.

“The town of Mattapoisett is being asked for less than three percent. The majority of the land that is going to be protected is in Mattapoisett,” he said.

Voters approved the article unanimously without further discussion.
