New development may bring 35 new students to Marion
Sippican School and Old Rochester Regional will definitely have new students as a result of the affordable housing development Marion Village Estates. Exactly how many is still a question.
Thirty apartments in the development are expected to be finished between mid February and early March, a delay from the original Feb. 1 date, and 30 more later in the spring.
In November, the Marion School Committee questioned the impact that new residents could have on Sippican School. On Wednesday night, Superintendent Doug White reported his findings.
“With the applications that are available, there are thirty-five students on this list who are school-age eligible,” he said.
A lottery was held that same evening for the apartments in the development, so the exact number of students is not yet known. White said the breakdown of grades for the 35 potential students is unknown and the children likely range in age from kindergarten to high school.
He added that the applications indicate an additional 65 students who are not yet school age, but who would “at some point and time be school eligible.”
The increase in school population will come relatively late in the school year, and will be factored into the 2016 school budget.
