New lifestyle shop looks to make Marion a 'destination'

Aug 7, 2013

Casual, beautiful, unique, natural, repurposed, vintage, antique, industrial, modern – the women behind Dean Ross Home have a lot of adjectives to describe their new store and their design style…and they haven’t even had their grand opening yet.

Kate Ross and Phoebe Dean Perry are the proprietors behind the new home lifestyle shop on Front Street.

The artists and designers, both Marion residents, met at the New Bedford Art Museum where Ross was executive director and Perry was development director.

“We worked really closely together for a year and realized that we made a fabulous team,” said Perry.

The new friends began talking about opening a retail space with interior design services and felt their differences complemented each other perfectly.

“Because I’m older, I bring one generational perspective, and she brings a younger one,” said Perry. “What one doesn’t bring to the table, the other does.”

Nine months before the “liquid opening” of their shop, the pair began hammering out details for what they wanted their business to accomplish.

“The business is all about a casual lifestyle, yet surrounding yourself with beautiful objects,” said Ross. “It’s about being with your family, being with your friends – being home and really enjoying your home.”

Both Ross and Perry want to keep the price point low for their clients by repurposing what is already there.

“It’s about going into somebody’s house and taking what they have, rearranging, rehanging art, add a piece here and there,” said Ross. “It’s not going to cost you an arm and a leg.”

The shop itself already features many pieces that are made using recycled materials, including silver plates “upcycled” into colorful enamelware and decorative pigs made from Mexican metal signs.

Ross’s own line of dog collars are also featured in the store’s pet corner as well as fine artwork, Turkish towels, and other home accessories. The two promised many more items to come in the future.

Perry said, “Think of it as a general store for your home.”

Like many store owners in the area, Ross said their goal is to support local artists and craftspeople.

And with their shop, Ross and Perry said they don’t want to be competition for other retail spaces in the area.

“I’d love to see more home-geared stores move to the Marion-Mattapoisett area because then we’re creating critical mass – a destination,” said Ross.

Perry agreed.

“We want to add value. We really care about what happens to this village,” she said.

Dean Ross Home is located at 148 Front Street. The grand opening will be in mid-September. Check their website or Facebook page for details.
