New storage facility discussed in Mattapoisett

A new 40-unit storage facility is in the works for an area off Route 6 near the Hillside Motel in Mattapoisett.

Land owner Peter Noyer and civil engineer Doug Schneider brought the proposal to the Planning Board on Monday for a public hearing.

There are two homes on Noyer's land as well as Village Signs, and a gravel lot used for dry boat storage, which would be converted into storage if the plan is approved.

The storage facility would include two aluminum buildings enclosed by a fence. Noyer said there would be electricity for lighting, but no water or sewer on the site.

“Basically the storage units will be available for daytime hours,” said Noyer, who proposed an 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. lockdown.

Members of the Planning Board asked Noyer how he would handle pest control and access in the event of a fire.

While renters would be prohibited from putting food or liquids in the dry storage facility, board member John Mathieu said, “Unfortunately, we can’t always trust what people are supposed to do.”

Noyer said he would regularly fumigate the area in the event that any items in the storage attracted vermin.

Before receiving approval from the Planning Board, Mathieu asked Noyer to get approval from the Fire Chief, and to confirm that previous zoning permits were applicable to the new project.

“I generally don’t have a problem with this plan,” said Mathieu.

The project is scheduled to be reviewed again at the board’s next meeting on February 4.
