Nicholas Memoli, 68
The family of Nicholas Memoli of Wareham sadly announced his death on Feb. 13 after a valiant battle with mesothelioma. The son of Armand and Anne Memoli, Mr. Memoli, the oldest of three brothers, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on March 8, 1946. He spent his childhood years in Stratford, Connecticut, and graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1968. While attending his first class at UConn, he met his future wife, Janet McFarlin of Weston.
After graduating with a B.A. in Economics from UConn, Mr. Memoli earned a master’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Minnesota in 1970. During a 31-year career, he worked for the federal government in Washington, D.C., as an agricultural marketing specialist and public affairs specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Upon retiring in 2001, Mr. Memoli moved to Wareham, where he was an active supporter of conservation organizations, including the Wareham Land Trust, the Coalition for Buzzards Bay and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
Mr. Memoli was an avid golfer and also enjoyed walking, swimming, or riding a bicycle in the Great Neck area of Wareham. He also enjoyed reading, good movies, and listening to classical music, including spending countless hours attending the many concerts of his musical family. A dedicated blood donor, Mr. Memoli began donating blood at the age of 22 and during the course of his life donated more than 24 gallons of blood – nearly twice his weight – to the American Red Cross and the South Coast Hospitals Group.
In addition to being survived by Janet, his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Mr. Memoli is survived by his son Christopher Memoli and wife his Susan of Wayland, his daughter Jennifer Memoli of Wareham, his grandchildren, Madeline and Nicholas Memoli of Wayland, his two brothers, Robert Memoli of Stratford, Conecticut, and Anthony Memoli of Waterbury, Connecticut, and his beloved labradoodle and constant companion, Eliot.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham, MA, on Friday, Feb. 20 from 5 - 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 11 Gibbs Avenue, Wareham on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
