Nor'easter results in few outages, accidents
Although the storm itself, with thunder and lightning, wasn't quiet, it seems things in the tri-town were during Thursday's blizzard. That's good news as a few more inches are forecast over the weekend.
“I think it went well, all things considered,” said Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee. “There was very little traffic. It allowed our guys to get the job done.”
A few drivers did end up stuck on the side of the road, but most were able to get out without a tow truck.
“It was horrendous, the driving conditions. I had to stop in the road. I couldn’t tell where the road was,” Magee said.
In Marion, a DPW worker reported that a black pickup with a plow attached to it ran into him and ran another car off the road. The hit and run occurred in the Point Road, County Road area. Soon after, police were called to the S-curve where a car spun out.
Down the road in Mattapoisett, Chief Mary Lyons said that one Comcast truck slid off the road near the transfer station, but otherwise it was a quiet day.
“We were really lucky,” she said. “For the most part, people stayed home, so that was very helpful.”
High winds and gusts of at least 50 mph obscured travel but resulted in relatively few power outages. In Mattapoisett, a downed pole in Harbor Beach left a street without power for a time, and Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee said a fallen tree on Clapp Road also took out electricity for a few residents.
Marion, however, had around 50 outages, which had all been resolved by Friday morning, according to the Eversource outage map.
The towns were still relatively quiet on Friday as schools in the tri-town remained closed for a second day and residents began to dig out.
The Rolf family in Mattapoisett were happy to put on their snow clothes and get outside. The trio had tubes to blow up and a nearby hill to to conquer on their snow day.
Nearby, Leslie Gray, also of Mattapoisett, had a smile on her face as she cleaned snow off her car. She said she fared well in the snow.
“I have a generator, so I have no fear!”
