Old Colony students take home medals at SkillsUSA
More than 70 Old Colony students competed Friday in the SkillsUSA District 1 competition. The vocational students took home 13 medals: five gold, five silver and three bronze.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization for students in career and technical education programs. The mission of Skills USA is to encourage its members, spread across thousands of high school and college chapters, to become world-class workers and responsible American citizens. Gold and silver medal winners at district competitions go on to complete at the state competition in April with the hopes of advancing to the national competition.
Winners at the national level can gain an audience with companies in their field as well as scholarships.
In addition to the medals, Old Colony sophomore Tara Butler was selected as a Massachusetts State Officer candidate. Butler and the 10 other students that won either gold or silver medals will travel to the SkillsUSA State Competition.
