Old Colony thankful for its team, regardless of the score
ROCHESTER— Old Colony Vocational High School lost 51-14 to Tri-County Regional Vocational/Technical High School during their Cougar Cup on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
Regardless of the loss, head coach Brandan Mendez said he was proud of his players.
“Super proud of the way the kids really played hard tonight and executed,” said Mendez. “We just got beat by a very talented, very good team. Those things happen sometimes but we’re proud of the way we played tonight.”
He wanted to focus on the 16 seniors, as this was their last game with the high school.
“The seniors really played as hard as they could,” Mendez said.
He mentioned a few seniors who had especially good plays- Gavin Newby and Andrew Oliveira each had big catches, and Ryan Orlando returned a kick for a touchdown.
He also mentioned a few other players who played well, such as the freshman quarterback making his first touchdown pass and kicking the onside kick, and the starting linebacker having a good game.
Mendez awarded two players the annual Cougar Cup awards, given to an offensive and a defensive player who performed well during the game. He typically honors the seniors with these awards but decided to award them to two freshmen who performed well: starting quarterback Mason Foye and inside linebacker Rowan Caulkins.
The loss followed a rollercoaster season, with a 4-7 win-loss record. The season ended with Mendez giving all the seniors hugs and praise and students asking him for photos together.
“It was an up and down season, but we learned a lot and we grew,” said Mendez, “And that’s what we expect here. We expect them to be consistent and be positive members of the community and they really rallied around each other tonight and really made a positive family tonight.”
