Old Hammondtown music teacher to conduct fundraisers

Old Hammondtown School’s instrumental music director Paul Halpainy wants to fine-tune the music program, starting with new band uniforms.

“I would estimate that they are 20 or so years old,” Halpainy told the Mattapoisett School Committee on Monday. “They’re very musty. It’s just time for some new uniforms.”

Halpainy proposed a number of fundraisers to generate money for the music program, including a penny drive with jars in each classroom where children can deposit change, a pasta sale and, in June, a fair called Band Blast.

In addition to uniforms, Halpainy said, “My dream is that we could offer scholarships for summer programs that some of our kids are involved in.”

Halpainy also hopes to purchase more school-owned instruments and repair the ones that are currently unusable.
