Opinion: Problem with speeding on Point Road

Oct 19, 2022

Dear Editor,

My name is Iain McManus. I am 14yr old freshman in high school at ORR. I live on a street off Point Road in Marion.

As you may or may not be aware, the speed limit on Point Road is 35mph and in some places only 25mph. I would like to bring to the attention of your readers that there is a problem with people speeding on Point Road.

As a resident of Marion, and Joanne Drive, I would like to access many community locations along Point Road. Myself and other residents find it difficult to access Planting Island, Wings Cove, many of the Sippican land’s trust trails, and the Marion Public Golf Course by foot or by bike. Many of the cars traveling along Point Road drive above the speed limit and don’t share the road. It is unfortunate that people that choose to use alternate modes of transportation (walking and cycling) are putting their lives in danger to access these places. I cannot drive myself to these locations because I am only 14 and don’t have a driver's license. If I want to go to Planting Island, I have to rely on my parents to drive me there rather than bike there myself. This is unfortunate, considering the town of Marion cares so much about their residents safety.

I would like to ask my fellow citizens of Marion: please observe the speed limit on Point Road and especially be mindful of cyclists and pedestrians on Point Road.

Thank you,
Iain McManus
