ORCTV wraps up free PSA shoot days

Nothing beats free publicity.

ORCTV, the area’s local cable access provider, wrapped up another round of free public service announcement shoot days Tuesday. The event gives non-profits, town departments or any local group a chance to speak about upcoming events worry free. PSA Shoot Days are held in April and October every year, according to ORCTV executive director Kim Miot. Miot also said this month’s participation was the highest ORCTV has had in awhile with 20 slots filled.

The free public service announcement shoot days started four years ago.

“It’s been really popular,” she said. It’s probably one of the most popular services we have. We have several non-profits that do regular monthly shows, but other nonprofits don’t have the staff or the time to do them. So this is a good way to give them a platform.”

The process is simple as well: show up and let Miot and program coordinator Robert Chiarito do the rest.

“Some people send pictures or video ahead of time,” Miot said. “Others just come with a piece of paper to read off. You can make it as advanced as you want.”

Participants are given a half-hour slot to record, but often the recording goes quicker than that. Miot said there are a number of seasoned shoot day veterans who simply come in, speak their message and are finished.

ORCTV broadcasts the announcements in bulk soon after the shooting days are over, and later on in the year they are spread out and placed between regular programming.

A few new participants in the event were Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School students Brianne Albritton and Olivia Cenerizio. They were announcing a craft and vendor fair at the school on Oct. 29.

“The senior class is trying to raise money so that students can have a free prom,” Cenerizio said. “We have over 20 crafters. Everyone knows the two of us for our school spirit, so we thought this would be a good way to get the word out.”

Though new to the experience, Albritton and Cenerizio did their announcement in one take.

Miot said that was the nice thing about the free shoot days.

“We’ve done this so many times and we have the system down pat,” she said. “Anyone can come in. And people love being a part of it and being on TV.”

For those unable to make it for the two days, ORCTV is hosting a re-shoot day Tuesday, Oct. 18. For more information, contact Kim Miot by phone at (508) 748-1600 or email kim@orctv.org.
