ORCTV's new director wants you

Dec 1, 2012

Don Cuddy knows you’ve got a great story to tell. Now he just has to convince you.

As the new Executive Director of Old Rochester Community Television, Cuddy’s mission is to get more and better content on the public access channel.

“This is a valuable asset to the community, and I don’t feel it’s been fully exploited,” said Cuddy.

Cuddy’s involvement with ORCTV started six years ago after a visit to his bank.

While there, one of the managers said she often found out the most interesting details about her customers in their obituaries. She asked him to interview members of the community to get their stories on video.

“I now have over 30 of those,” said Cuddy. “I believe that everybody has a story to tell, you just have to provide them with the opportunity to do that.”

As a journalist with The Standard Times for 10 years, Cuddy has been hunting for interesting stories and news for a long time. However, with his new position, he wants to encourage people to develop their own content.

“We will go out and shoot something that benefits the community, but ideally we would like to facilitate so that other people can do it themselves,” Cuddy said.

From youth interested in learning the ropes to senior citizens with history to share, Cuddy wants everyone in Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester to know, “We’re open for business.”

Only in his third week on the job, Cuddy has already begun reaching out to get new programming on the air.

He’s hoping to get community groups, nonprofits, and even fellow Boston Marathon runners, who often raise funds for charities, to come into the studio.

“Everybody has a message they’re trying to get out there and this is the medium,” he said.

In addition to a clip on holiday safety by Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray, Cuddy is working on convincing his 16-year-old daughter to get some footage that would interest her age group.

“I don’t know what teenagers are really into,” said Cuddy. “If they made their own videos, then their peers would watch it. That’s the challenge.”

Cuddy’s vision for ORCTV is long-term.

“You have to build momentum. This isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight,” he said. “I’m going to have a lot of fun with this job. I think it’s of value. I have to show it’s of value to the community at large.”
