ORR alum scores academic, athletic achievement

While Nick Filloramo can often be found on the diamond at Wheaton College, it’s clear from his GPA that he also spends plenty of time in the books.

The starting pitcher was recognized for his hard work recently when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced Filloramo’s selection to the 2014 Baseball Academic All-Conference Team. The award is given to varsity athletes with at least a 3.5 GPA. Filloramo has a 3.53.

A Rochester resident, Filloramo studies economics with a minor in business management. And he admitted that it’s not easy to balance a rigorous sports calendar with academics.

“It takes a lot of work. I attribute a lot of it to good time management and a good work ethic,” he said.

Filloramo learned something about work ethic while at Old Rochester Regional High School where he played soccer, basketball and baseball for four years.

Coach Steve Carvalho encouraged his academics and athleticism, said Filloramo.

“He’s a large reason I stayed in with sports,” said Filloramo, who was recruited by Wheaton for baseball and also received an academic grant from the college.

Filloramo was part of the American Legion Post #220 summer league team in high school and has participated in summer leagues during his college career.

All the hard work has paid off for Filloramo, who has been a starting pitcher for three of his four years at Wheaton. During his tenure, the Lyons have been Massachusetts Conference Champions and made it to the World Series.

“We’ve been extremely successful,” Filloramo said. “I like to think I had a pretty successful career.”

As graduation looms, the varsity athlete is looking for more success in the job market but isn't sure yet where he will land.

“It’s kind of a big question for me,” Filloramo said of his future. “In an ideal world, I would love to use my economics degree and stay around sports.”
