ORR boys baseball ends regular season with a win

The Old Rochester Regional baseball team defeated Coyle and Cassidy High School 8-1 at home during its final regular season on Friday.

Last week, the Bulldogs clinched its first South Coast Conference title for the first time in seven years. However, the team’s conference win-loss record forced them to share that honor with Dighton-Rehoboth despite beating that team twice this year.

But on Friday Coach Steve Carvalho said the focus now is on the state tournament.

“Stay in the moment,” he told players after the game. “You can get hot at the right time again. Never say die.”

The encouragement came after a series of losses that proved to be a humbling experience for the players, he said.

With pitcher Andrew Ryan on the mound, Carvalho said the team had a chance to make a good run.

“We’ve got Andrew Ryan – who is a bona fide ace – so I feel confident going into the tournament,” Carvalho said.

Last year, the Bulldog’s season ended in the final inning of a game against East Bridgewater.

“They were playing tough,” he said. “That was a tough pill to swallow.”

With five seniors on the team Carvalho said this year’s squad is ready to go. Playing in the South Coast Conference has prepared the Bulldogs.

“It’s a tough league, from one through nine, teams are constantly beating each other up,” he said.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association will announce the playoff schedule on May 27.

ORR’s regular season stands at 14 wins and 6 losses. Its conference record is 12 wins and 4 losses.
