ORR boys soccer team focused on offense

Sep 11, 2014

The Old Rochester Regional High School boys soccer team got off to an explosive start this season. During the team’s first two games, it scored 12 goals total to beat Case High School and Apponequet.

“We’re excited about our offense,” said head coach Mike Devoll. “It helps that  our younger guys had a lot of game time last year. We have a lot of experience.”

This is the second year Devoll will pull double duty as the high school principal and soccer coach. But it’s a familiar position for him. In 2006, he led the team to win the Division 3 South Sectionals. He also coached in 2002, 2007 and 2008 before stepping down when he was hired as principal in 2009.

Last year, the team posted a 10-5-4 record, which propelled it to the state tournament.

“It was a great season. We hope to repeat that success,” Devoll said.

That could prove to be a challenge since nine seniors graduated, but Devoll said the team’s captains, Melvin Vincent and Hunter Parker, are ready to lead.

“Melvin is a really outstanding goalie,” he said.

The team is finding its way early in the season. On Monday, New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School dealt the team a 3-0 loss.

“They are one of the best team’s in the league and we didn’t play well that day,” Devoll said.

The team’s next game is Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Fairhaven at Hastings Middle School in Fairhaven.
