ORR celebrates state championship with ring ceremony

One after the other, members of the Old Rochester boys basketball team accepted their state championship rings in the gym on Wednesday night.

Current players and those who graduated last year admired the rings given by Coach Steve Carvalho at center court. The ceremony took place before the second home game of the season got underway.

When the rings had all been handed out, Athletic Director Bill Tilden unfurled the Division 3 state championship banner to the accompaniment of cheers.

“This basketball team captured the heart and spirit of the entire tri-town community,” said ORR Principal Mike Devoll. “I was along for the ride, and it was quite the ride.”

Carvalho thanked everyone who helped make the school’s first state basketball championship possible -- administrators, coaching staff, his family and especially the players

“These kids made basketball what it’s supposed to be in this area,” Carvalho said.

There was applause not only for the basketball team, but for the girls cross country team, as Devoll congratulated the girls for capturing a state championship title earlier in the year.
