ORR enacts new student parking policy
After concerns were raised at the April 5 Old Rochester Regional School Committee meeting about students driving dangerously near the school, Principal Mike Devoll and Vice Principal Michael Parker have drawn up a new parking permit policy.
When students register their cars for parking on campus, they will also be signing an agreement to obey traffic laws. At the April 5 meeting, ORR school resource officer Matthew McGraw said that officers tend to give students warnings the first time instead of a written citation that would go on their records.
However, with the new policy, police officers or teachers can report a student driving recklessly straight to the school, where they will be reprimanded.
The policy is in effect in the 30 minutes before and after school hours.
The first time it happens the student will lose parking privileges for one day, the second time for two days and the third time for five days. If it happens more than three times parking privileges can be revoked for the remainder of the year.
Administration decided to invoke this policy so that students would still be taught the consequences of driving irresponsibly without being issued a ticket.
“We’ll make them take the bus for a day,” Devoll said. “We want it to be a learning experience.”
