ORR girls field hockey starts season undefeated
The Old Rochester Regional High School girls field hockey team has consistently made it to the state tournament for the past few years, but have fallen short of winning a title.
“We’re always in the quarter finals,” head coach Polly Lawrence said. “Making it to the finals have proved to be elusive.”
Two years ago, the team lost by a single point in double overtime. Last year, the team was defeated in triple overtime.
That might not be the case this year.
After beating rival Apponequet on Friday the team is undefeated with a 4-0 record.
“That was the toughest game of the year for us,” Lawrence said. “They are always tough, always.” Both South Coast Conference teams had 3-0 records going into that game.
With a strong senior squad, and younger players who have been playing for years, the team is poised to be a contender.
“We’ve got a lot of speed. The bench is pretty deep and there are a lot of kids I feel confident putting in games,” Lawrence said. “There is a lot of experience here.”
In fact, one of the team’s strengths might prove to be a weakness.
“Our passing is really good. Sometimes too good,” Lawrence said. “In some cases, the girls need to be less generous and go for the goal.”
The team’s next game is Wednesday, at 3:30 p.m. against Seekonk at home.
