ORR girls tennis team preps for postseason
With two final matches, the last week of the regular season came to a close for the Old Rochester Regional High School Lady Bulldogs tennis team.
On May 20, the team faced Dighton-Rehoboth for an away game. In a narrow 2-3 loss ORR fought hard. The Lady Bulldogs got wins from second doubles pair senior Triona Cuddy and sophomore Charlotte Levine in three sets. Senior Haley Dickerson took her match into three sets while playing on a sprained ankle.
One day later, the Lady Bulldogs hosted Bishop Stang High School. The Lady Bulldogs were dealt their first 0-5 loss of the season. Dickerson was the only ORR player to win a set.
The team accumulated an 11-7 record over the course of the regular season. In the South Coast Conference, ORR’s record is 9-5, enough to keep the Lady Bulldogs alive to compete in the postseason MIAA Girls Tennis South Division 3 tournament.
Assistant Coach Russ Bailey said he is content with his team for making it into the postseason.
“I’m proud of the girls. We’ve made it into the postseason, and now the chips will fall where they will,” Bailey said.
Head Coach Robert Hohne added to Bailey’s comment.
“We’ve had different people come through for us throughout the season,” Hohne said. “Now we need a solid effort from all five starting positions.”
Hohne mentioned that the postseason would be a challenge because of how inexperienced the team is.
“I hope our players will recognize their weaknesses and work on them in the offseason,” Hohne said.
Postseason matches begin Thursday, May 29. Opponents, locations and times are to be announced.
This postseason is a new experience for the young players on the team including sophomore Amy Bichajian.
She chose tennis because, “I like how it’s an individual sport. You can only improve yourself by working hard.”
