Anyone feeling the winter doldrums need only look to the the girls of the Old Rochester Regional High School track team for a pick-me-up – that is, if you can catch them.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, the girls took home their fourth South Coast Conference Championship title in as many years. The meet took place at Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical School’s indoor track. The girl's regular season record is 8-0-0.

Arriving ahead of fellow SCC league members, the ORR track team got a head start to their warm ups and stretches.

“The depth of our team is our number one advantage,” said girls head coach Cindy Tilden, “All of the other teams want to beat us, and we want to win.”

The Lady Bulldogs defended their undefeated SCC title from Bourne, Fairhaven, Wareham, Deighton Rehoboth and Apponequet high schools. With some strong competition from other local athletes, Tilden was happy with her team’s performance.

“It’s a satisfying feeling,” said Tilden. “Each year gets harder, and the league is getting stronger. We just keep our girls motivated.”

Senior captain, Morgan Dasilva, helped her teammates follow through with their success throughout the winter season.

“Hard work is definitely the key,” said Dasilva, who runs in the 55, 300 and 600-meter races. “Everyone on the team wants success, so they are determined to earn it…even if that means enduring hard practices.”

Winning doesn’t come easy. Senior captain, Paige Santos, has worked hard to improve her hurdle time by .4 seconds from last year, making 9.11 seconds her fastest hurdle time this season.

“Sean Mederos, the hurdle coach, has a lot more speed work this year. I’ve also grown and gained more muscle, which has allowed me to improve this year regards to last.”

Santos plans on running track next year in college, but is still unsure where.

Several athletes also qualified for the state championship meet on Feb. 10 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
