ORR golf team 'as strong as ever'

Somehow losing seven seniors and three experienced undergraduate players hasn’t slowed down Old Rochester Regional’s golf team.

Lead by head coach Chris Cabe and assistant Mike Beson, the team of 15 golfers is undefeated with a 5-0 record, and they’re looking to make another good showing at state finals next month.

“I think that we should definitely win the conference,” said sophomore Collin Fitzpatrick. “If we don’t go undefeated, I would view that as a disappointment.”

Fitzpatrick, a Marion resident, is Cabe’s number one player this year, rising from the second spot he held last season. Then, the team finished with a 17-1 record and fourth overall in Division 3.

“We’ve just been blessed with good golfers around here,” Cabe said. “I’m expecting some good things out of them this year.”

The season is short for the co-ed golf team with the regular season wrapping up by mid October, so Cabe doesn’t have too much time with his players. Fortunately, many of them have been playing since they were kids and spent the summer golfing, competing, and thus improving their game.

For the younger players, Cabe’s focus is on consistency.

“If they shoot a fifty one day and a forty the next day, there’s something going on there,” Cabe said. “Everybody has their bad days, we just want to keep them few and far between.”

While the players often have the mechanics of the game down by the time they come to Cabe, he does help them refine their skills and learn to manage the golf course – both for their home field at the Bay Club and for away matches.

“You have to learn to get the feel of the touch off of the putter, how to read the green correctly,” he said.

Neither Cabe nor his players seem nervous as they move ahead with the season, although they have had one or two close matches.

Senior Jared Nye, the team captain, said he is looking forward to every match.

“I think we’re as strong as ever,” he said.
