ORR golfer putts to state

When Andrew Augustine leaves school, he comes out swinging.

The Old Rochester Regional High School golfer recently putted his way to a medal at the South Cape Cod Sectional, finishing in first place for Division 3.

“I had a better day than everyone else, I guess,” said Augustine, a golfer for nine years.

The senior doesn’t seem too concerned with fame and fortune on the golf course, and said he took up the sport because his dad played and he had an aptitude for it.

“I liked the fact that it’s the kind of a sport where you rely on yourself instead of your team. I’ve always been naturally good at it,” he said.

A member of the ORR golf team since freshman year, Augustine only slows down during the winter months. In the summer, he plays from seven in the morning until five in the afternoon.

Despite this rigorous self-imposed schedule, he said, “I don’t get tired of it at all. A lot of my friends that don’t play it in high school come out in the summer and tag along.”

Along with the support of his parents, Augustine said his coach Andrew Santos helped him excel in the sport to this point. “He’s been there the whole way. He knows a lot about the game. I’m very grateful for having him in my life, too.”

Augustine’s win at the sectional earned him a place at the state finals on Monday. The senior has gone to state for the past two years on his own and finished fourth last year.

Before the tournament, Augustine said he wasn’t too worried about the outcome. “The sectional tournament is more nerve wracking. Here you don’t have anything to lose,” he said.

Augustine finished the tournament with a 14-over-par 86 this year compared to 5-over-par at the sectional, which he described as “pretty bad.” Even so, he said, “It was fun, except for the cold.”

With graduation in June, the golfer is still considering colleges. “I definitely want to play in college,” said Augustine. “For college, I want to go into business, but I think sports will always be a part of my life.”
