Jun 2, 2017

The Old Rochester Regional High School class of 2017, and their families, gathered at the school on Thursday night to honor academic and athletic achievements.

“This is, to me, the best night of the year,” Principal Mike Devoll said. “It’s a night for all of us –students, faculty, families – to recognize the students of the class of 2017.”

The ceremony recognized students for a plethora of things: academic achievements, athletic achievements, leadership roles, community service, musical achievements and more.

Valedictorian Hannah Guard had perhaps the most lucrative night, leaving with six awards. She won certificates of excellence in AP English 12, AP Calculus and AP Chemistry, department awards in Spanish and mathematics and won the Scholar Athlete Award.

It was a big night for salutatorian Daniel Renwick as well, who left with five awards. An accomplished athlete in track at ORR, Renwick took home the Lester Teixeira Athletic Award. Additionally, he received a certificate of excellence in honors physics, the American Mathematics Competition 12 School Winner award, the Superintendent’s Award and was one of three commended students from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Rep. Bill Straus was also on hand at the ceremony to hand out the Top 10 Scholars citations and medals.

“[Awards night] is a reminder that you can accomplish great things at any age,” he said.

The Top 10 Scholars are Guard, Renwick, Molly Lanagan, Jordan McArdle, Maxxon Wolski, Jacob Spevack, James Goulart, Emily Ziino, Erin Costa and Jonathan Kvilhaug.
